The Bronx ranks as the poorest of New York State’s 62 counties, with high unemployment and poverty rates; 30% of people live below the poverty level, which is about double the rate for New York City as a whole (Source: U.S. Census Bureau data 2016). Also very telling is this: 1,600 of our students were sent the following text message: “Some Hostos students miss meals due to money…Do you face this challenge?” Alarmingly, 69% of respondents replied “yes” and 14% replied “sometimes” for a total of 83% of respondents voluntarily reporting that they have lacked the money to feed themselves.
