Institutional Mission and Profile

Hostos Community College is an educational agent for change, transforming and improving the quality of life in the South Bronx and neighboring communities. Since 1968, Hostos has served as a gateway to intellectual growth and socioeconomic mobility, as well as a point of departure for lifelong learning and career success. Hostos offers 27 associate degrees and two certificate programs that facilitate seamless transfer to The City University of New York’s (CUNY) four-year colleges or baccalaureate studies at other institutions. Hostos is part of CUNY, the nation’s leading urban public university, which serves more than 500,000 students at 24 colleges.

 

Hostos’ student body is reflective of the communities it serves, comprised of predominantly low- and moderate income individuals. The most recent available student profile data indicates the following:

 

 77% have an annual income of less than $30,000

  • 67% are female; 33% are male

  • 66% reside in the Bronx

  • 60% of freshmen speak a native language other than English

  • 59% are Hispanic; 22% are Black

  • 58% are first generation college students

  • 27% report that their parent/guardian's highest education attainment is some high school or less
