Hector Díaz - Biography

Hector L. Diaz was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He attended Morris High School and Mercy College, where he graduated Cum Laude with a Baccalaureate in Psychology. Mr. Diaz served three years in the United States Army and was honorably discharged.

Mr. Diaz was the former City Clerk and Clerk of the Council, his duties included the overall supervision of the office of the Marriage License Bureau, lobbying Bureau as well as attesting to each local law enacted by the Council and all Legislation desired by affecting the City requiring concurrent action by the State Legislature.

Prior to becoming the City Clerk, Hector was the Bronx County Clerk for over 14 years. As County Clerk, he supervised a staff of over 70 employees. He was also the Commissioner of Jurors and Clerk of the Supreme Court. Hector was the first Latino County Clerk in the State ofNew York.

Mr. Diaz was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1983. He served with distinction until he was appointed County Clerk of Bronx County. He chaired various standing committees and sub-committees in the Legislature. In 1987, the New York State Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force was created by Hector and since its inception he chaired the Task Force successfully increasing the involvement of the Latino community of New York State in the political process.

Mr. Diaz has been active in the civic and political life of his community in the South Bronx for many years. A member of numerous organizations in the Bronx and throughout the State, Hector was also former Chairman of the Bronx Venture Corporation, Vice Chairman of the South Bronx Mental Health Council and Vice President of the Puerto Rican Conference of Bronx County. He also represented Bronx County as Commissioner of the Board of Elections, New York City. Hector is a member of the Board of Trustees of Boricua College, a member of The University of the State of New York Education Departments Local Government Records Advisory Council. He serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Unify Court System Bronx County Law Library.

He is presently the President of Acacia Network, a not for profit organization, the largest Hispanic Organization in New York State and second largest in the country.

Mr. Diaz is married to Miriam Martinez-Diaz, former Principal of Public School, #25 in the South Bronx, City of New York. They have two children, Jessica Mia and Ricardo Antonio.
